A fine pair of 1940 pattern RAF flying boots. Condition is exemplary with only very light wear throughout.
Original untouched soles. Upper suede body in both cases is in superb condition. Sheep skin liners moth free, zips in good working order. Slight ageing to the waterproof seal from sole to suede tops at the toes (see images).
The 1940 pattern boot was without the ankle securing strap.
Moving to this practical design from their forerunners, made a boot that sadly lacked style when compared to earlier models. Style was not however an AM over-riding consideration in their development; added to the lack of style, this boot was a very loose fit and was prone to falling off, especially in a situation of danger, ie a bail out. This was ‘another’ factor as to why they were not popular with air crew, and the latter the reason the later pattern boot manufactured with an ankle strap to prevent loss.
All this said a fine pair of boots that display well on a mannequin.
