Possibly one of the rarest pieces of British WW1 portable field 'equipment', being a wooden .303 ammunition chest / box.
For some reason British ammunition boxes of this vintage, unlike the French or German equivalents have not survived activities / use and hardly ever come onto the market. Box is in excellent condition with many of its original paper content / use labels still present. Top lid label states not for use in machine guns.
Tin liner present with the top plate torn away as you would expect. One rope carry handle broken off and absent.
Brass securing catch also long absent.
Wood worm and damage free.
All this said, this is a wonderful, very, very scarce item !
